How Can Massage Therapy Relieve Headache Pain?
Headaches can be incredibly disruptive and painful, but luckily massage therapy may offer relief. Massage therapy works by targeting the underlying cause of a headache - usually stress or tension - and using specific techniques to alleviate it. In addition to this, massage therapy can also be used to increase blood flow to the head, which helps reduce pain and improve relaxation in the body.
Massage techniques that are especially useful for reducing headaches include deep tissue massage and trigger point therapy. Deep tissue massage focuses on releasing tension from the deeper layers of muscle tissue, thus relieving pressure throughout the entire body. Trigger point therapy is a form of myofascial release which specifically targets areas of tenderness (or 'trigger points') which are thought to be connected to headaches.
It's important to note that every person is different and what works for one person may not necessarily work for someone else – before every session, I like to chat with my clients so I can recommend treatments tailored specifically to you.
